REVIEW: Trinity & Relic by Deena Remiel

Brethren Beginnings Volume 1, Trinity and the recently released Relic by Deena Remiel are carefully woven tales about the Brethren who are a special breed of angels sent down to earth to protect humans from evil.  Within this group of Brethren there are Healers, Warriors and Protectors.
In Trinity, we learn of Michael D’Angelo, principal of the elementary school where the main character Emma works and her daughter Hannah goes to school.  After learning of some troubling events in Hannah’s and Emma’s lives, Michael realizes that it is time for the Brethren to step in, not realizing that it was almost too late.
In Relic, we learn of Raphael, a Healer who has lost his ability to heal completely, and Serena who owns a business showing people the wonders of the spiritual Arizona mountains. Raphael, hiking through these spiritual mountains, is using the time to try and figure out why he has lost his ability to heal others when, during one of those hikes, he comes across Serena bloody & beaten, barely alive.  He has just enough healing power to keep her alive and get her to the hospital.  This is where their story together begins.

Shauni* Squeeling OMG! I loved these books!

Kimberly* Watching Shauni wiggle and squeel like a little girl on her birthday, I giggle.  They are AWESOME books aren’t they? I mean REALLY? Where else do you get HAWT Mangels (that’s our word for the angels that are this manly and smokin’ -- related only to the Brethren Series) that can make you want one all for yourself?

Shauni *crosses arms* Deena said I already get a Mangel.

Kimberly *Shaking my head* I know she did.  *Pouting a bit because I really want Cassiel as my own angel*. Ok. So, in Trinity, it’s your basic good versus evil book, right? I mean, we’re talking about angels here. In some aspects, that would be the truth! Right Shauni?

Shauni* I do think that Trinity does have all your Good versus Evil aspects and I do love that even though they are angels, they aren’t what you think of with the halo and white robe carrying a harp.  These angels are 100% up to date with everything that we have in society now, electronics, clothing, speech....all of it.

Kimberly* So true! I mean how many angels do you know wear leather pants and are built like Greek Gods?  Also, the way Deena writes Trinity and Relic you aren’t bogged down by a lot of foul language and play-by-play sex scenes -- not that we don’t all love our sex scenes.  The way these are written, you get the emotion behind them.  Not the deeds.  You know what’s happening but it’s more about the people and their love for each other and not just the actions.

In these novels, what you get is all storyline -- and a GREAT storyline it is.  Deena weaves the tale and back story about each main character in a way that you get just what you need to know about them, when you need to know it.  It keeps you wondering and keeps you involved in the story, throughout the entire book.

Shauni* *Day dreaming about Mangels in leather pants, shaking head, wiping drool* Sorry. Yes even though Deena wrote these stories without a lot of curse words and detailed sex scenes, believe me your heart will race and you will feel all the emotions through out the whole storyline.

Kimberly* That’s exactly right, Shauni.  One of my favorite parts that proves that point is in Relic and, without giving spoilers to those who haven’t read it yet, there is a storm involved and Raphael’s gorgeous wings!

Shauni* I love that part too, Kim. It is hard for me to post my favorite part.  There are a couple that really stood out for me. Michael, in Trinity, who wouldn't want a protector like that and Raphael the gift he gave Serena was the sweetest.  I had tears running down my face.

Kimberly* A lot of sequels out there sometimes just throw the next story at you and you sometimes have to go back and look up information to try to remember what happened to certain characters.  I loved the way Deena tied Relic’s character Serena back into Trinity.  She isn’t directly in Trinity but without giving spoilers we can’t tell you how she does it and with what character.  Trust us when we say, she gives you back story about a character Agremon (an evil dude in Trinity) uses and discards. It all comes full circle in Relic and I appreciated the way it was written.

SNIPPETS AND QUOTES:
In Trinity, Michael and Emma find each other coming to terms with their attraction for each other that, for Michael, has been growing for years.  Here is a quote that goes to show you that the Brethren aren’t mere angels but have all the desires of men as well.  Emma asks Michael: “Would you like coffee or something”?  His response is: “Or something....” he says as he kisses her passionately.

In Relic, Serena realizes that the soul of Sirona, Raphael’s long ago deceased wife/Goddess of Healing resides within her.  As Raphael was aware of this to an extent, Serena is furious and the snippet goes like this:  “Who’d you throw up against the wall and make love to in the hallway that first time? Was it her you tore the shirt from when we were out in the storm, perhaps?  Or was it her every bloody time, and only me that really got screwed?”

Well, Goddesses, what do you think? Let us just say, that these novels are something that can be read by just about anybody.  We loved them.  I would let my teenage niece read them.  I truly can’t think of anybody, over the age of about 18, who wouldn’t enjoy these books.  There aren’t any “hot buttons” in these books (such as rape, BDSM, same sex relations, etc).  These are just books that make you feel good, make you think that Good really CAN and really DOES overcome Evil.  And really, isn’t that what we want at the end of the day?  Closing a book, putting it down, sighing with pleasure and thinking to ourselves, “That was a really good book”.  You will with this series.

Speaking of “Series”: A little bird told us -- ahem -- Miss Deena herself, that the next book in the Brethren series, Elixxir, is in the works.  It is in the hands of her Beta readers now!!!  AND....She gave me a hint and OMG! EXPLOSIVE! That’s all I’m going to say! This book is going to blow your socks off. I have a feeling that the chemistry and the twists and turns are going to have us all grabbing the edge of our seats.

WELCOME KERRIANNE COOMBES WITH RUNNING HOME, RELEASING 02/21/2012

Hello Goddesses! We have a very special treat for you today! Kerrianne Coombes has stopped by to tell us a little bit about her new book, Running Home, that comes out TOMORROW, February 21st!  Here is the book blurb that sounds just scrumptious!
Tom Cane, Ex-military man and self professed recluse turned farmer, wants nothing more from life but the chance to wallow in his own pity.  The shrapnel lodged permanently in his leg a daily reminder of his failings during his last tour of duty.  On a cold, rainy, British evening fate delivers a new reason to live in the form of Joanne Sloane, the daughter of a socialite and abused wife of an up and coming businessman.  Desperate and in fear of her life, she flees her home and stumbles onto Tom's land. Together their passions ignite and the need to rescue one another entangles them in a bitter fight for their lives.

And even more scrumptious is the book snippet that Kerrianne shared on her website http://kerriannecoombes.wordpress.com/
She moved with him, sliding her hands over his chest, gripping, and scraping. Her nails left tingles in their wake as she dragged them up and over his neck. She tugged at his hair, pulled him closer, stood on her tiptoes as he kissed her wildly.
Tom wanted to roar as erotic pressure built in his balls. The sexy way her hands and nails danced over his body were forcing him to lose control. He wanted her, wanted her naked, and under him.
Doesn’t that just make your mouth water??? We can’t wait for this book to get into our hot little hands!  It sounds like a book you can sink your teeth into, wrap your hands around, and make you want to bring the pages to life.
Ok, Kerrianne, how about a few questions to entice the readers?
When did you start writing?
Well, I have always written little bits here and there, but it was about four years ago that I decided to put a little more effort into my hobby.
What spurred you to become an author?
I have a wild and sometimes fantastical imagination, so I decided to put it to good use! Writing is a form of release for me.
What gave you your inspiration for this book?
I don't really know. I know I had the idea for Tom, a recluse and ex-military man, for a while but I didn't know what his story was. When I had the idea of Jo, a tortured wife, I had to put the pair together. I love Matchmaking. ;-)
Why did you pick the title Running Home?
Because when Jo makes the decision to run away from her abusive husband, she actually finds that home is not a brick-built house, it can be a person too.
Tell us, exactly what genre would you classify your book and why?
Contemporary erotic romance.
How long did it take you to write the book and become published?
I wrote Running Home in three weeks. When it had been BETA'D I sent my submission in, and it was accepted a week later. That was a very happy day indeed!
How did you choose Secret Cravings Publishing?  Were there other publishers wanting to sign you? Secret Cravings were asking for submissions for their line 'special love' and I felt Running Home' was a good fit for what they were asking for-- plus my crit partner Kathleen Grieve gave me a push. ;-)
Ok, now a Bakin’ Goddesses question:  If you were a dessert, what would it be and why? Creme brûlée, because once you crack through my sweet exterior, you find I am soft and gooey inside...
When you think of this book, what kind of foods do you think the characters would eat during a romantic dinner? For instance for another author, we suggested a wonderful Lavendar Creme Brulee for their characters because of the way those characters interacted with each other.
In the book, Tom and Jo eat a nice beef stew. It is comfort food, and Tom is Jo's comfort.
Are you a full-time writer or is this book something you wrote when you came home from work, on weekends, during holidays?
Since we emigrated to France I have been lucky enough to have more time to write. I have two kids, so full time writing can't happen. But one day I hope it will.
Did you let the characters tell their stories or did they allow you to steer them in the directions you thought they should go?
They totally told this story. I have no control over any of my characters. *sigh*
When you think of Tom, even with his leg imbedded with shrapnel, what stands out about his physical nature? Would his eyes attract you the most? His bulging biceps? The rock hard abs (as Shauni would say -- her favorite part are the 6-pack abs aka “penis pointers”)?? What is it about him that would tempt you?
Everything! He is a sex-pot! Shauni would not be disappointed, he has perfect penis pointers.  But for me, probably his deep, rumbling voice.. Yeah, that would work every time.
Ok, I’ll ask the question....What about Joanne? Is she a woman who is a stick figure and needs a hoagie to eat? Or is she a voluptuous woman who turns men’s heads even though she’s not the size of a pixie stick? Joanne is sexy, smart and very classy. Tom is a gonner immediately. ;-)
So, Kerrianne, now is your time to give us information about you, the book, or whatever you would like the readers to know.
I have another book coming out in April called, The One That Got Away. It is another contemporary romance. Then in May I have the first of a three book series of paranormal romances coming out. I am very excited!
You can find me on twitter kerrianne_xx and Facebook. And I have a blog www.kerriannecoombes@blogspot.com
We would like to thank Kerrianne for stopping by and giving us this opportunity to be one of the first blogs to showcase her book and we wish her all the best!  Ya’ll all run out and grab a copy of Running Home because it sounds like a smokin’ HAWT book.

Scotch Bonnet Chili Blini With Lobster in Honor of Sylvain Reynard's Gabriel's Inferno

Since we've finished with all the giveaways and it's been a little while since we've posted our own recipe, we thought it a good idea to post one for you today.  I (Kimberly) told you I'd post the Lobster Blini recipe that I wanted to post on Sylvain's interview but instead went with the Lavender Creme Brûlée Dreamy, Creamy Love Bites.  So, without anymore fanfare, here is the Lobster Blini recipe courtesy of The Seduction Cookbook - Culinary Creations For Lovers by Diane Brown.

Scotch Bonnet Chili Blini With Lobster
Shellfish, considered to be the headiest aphrodisiac, contains phosphorus, an element said to spark erotic desire.  Chiles provoke amore by stimulating the same physical effects of lovemaking: the body becomes heated, the pulse quickens, and the face flushes.  These starters are eaten with fingers, and can easily slip into the lips of your lover.

MAKES 6 APPETIZERS
1 small egg, beaten; use half
1/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon, plus 1 teaspoon, melted butter
1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 Scotch bonnet, or habanero chile, minced fine
(Use gloves when handling chiles and avoid touching our skin and eyes)

2 large lobster claws, poached and shelled, (purchase prepared from local fish market)
      sliced into six portions
1-1/2 ounces of creme fraiche (available in the diary section of well-stocked supermarkets)
          or sour cream
1 tablespoon caviar of choice

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.  Beat the milk, 1 tablespoon melted butter, and egg (use half) lightly in a mixing bowl. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together; add them to egg mixture, stirring just enough to dampen the flour.  Mix in chile.
2.  Heat a griddle over medium-high heat and spread remaining butter over surface.  Pour a tablespoon of mixture onto griddle and cook until bubbles form on top.  Turn and brown the other side.  Hold at room temperature.  Blini can be made 12 hours in advance.  Cover until ready to serve.
3.  Top each blini with 1/4 teaspoon creme fraiche, 1 lobster claw slice, and a dab of the caviar.  Serve immediately.

Unfortunately, I don't have a photo of this particular blini; however, here are a couple of photos that will give you an idea as to what the outcome should look like.  Remember, you can fold the blinis as they are in the first photo or you can leave them as round discs if the disc is thick enough to hold the ingredients.  I personally love the way the first blini looks.  Both blinis are only missing the lobster.

Doesn't this sound YUMMY??  Gabriel introduced Julia to some very sensual flavors and textures when they went to dinner or the club.  I think that with his knowledge of food and his need to share that with Julia this would have been a very sexy recipe that would have had him engrossed in her lips and mouth even more than he already was.  Seeing her reaction to the Scotch bonnet with her skin flushing, her pupils dilating, her intake of breath as the flavors touched each taste bud and the creme fraiche soothing over the sting from the Scotch bonnet would have sent Gabriel over the edge; however, this is all just my opinion.

This seems like a recipe that may be "hard" but do a google search and find some other recipes for blinis.  There are some very good recipes out there for caramelized pear blinis.  *I think I just heard my stomach grumble*
